Carotid Artery Stenosis: Why Diabetics Are More Susceptible

Carotid artery stenosis, a condition involving the hardening of the arteries, is  far more common in patients with diabetes.  But why does diabetes mean you are more likely to suffer from carotid artery stenosis? People suffering from diabetes are in fact twice as likely to experience strokes or heart attacks later in life. This is because sugar that cannot be absorbed in the cells remains in the blood where it accumulates.
